If you are a breastfeeding mom trying to stay dairy free, you know it can feel overwhelming at first. Between middle of the night feeds, constant hunger, and figuring out what foods are safe, it takes some adjustment.
Today I am sharing a realistic day in the life of a dairy free breastfeeding mom, including what I eat, simple dairy free meal ideas, and easy food swaps that make breastfeeding while dairy free much easier.
If you are wondering what to eat while breastfeeding dairy free, I hope this gives you practical ideas and encouragement.
Middle of the Night Feeds and the Snack That Saves Me
I normally nurse one to two times per night, so saying the first thing I do when I wake up at 6:30 AM feels a little untruthful.
Because honestly, the day starts much earlier than that.
Let’s talk about those middle of the night breastfeeding feeds. Am I the only one who gets hungry while nursing at night? Surely not, especially if my baby is having a particularly hungry night.
When I breastfed my other babies, I would grab something quick like a snack bar, a cheese stick, or even a cookie. Not exactly the healthiest options.
Now that I am dairy free, I have found a much better option.
Before bed I leave out a small bowl of raw or roasted almonds. Almonds contain healthy fats, a little protein, and enough carbs to make the perfect 2 AM breastfeeding snack. The crunch even helps keep me awake during sleepy feeds.
If your family has a nut allergy this obviously would not be recommended, but for many moms this can be a great dairy free breastfeeding snack.
Morning Routine Water First Then Coffee
Once the morning officially begins, the very first thing I reach for is water, followed closely by coffee.
Because coffee and motherhood seem to go hand in hand.
My favorite dairy free coffee combination is:
Oatly oat milk
A splash of Planet Oat French Vanilla creamer
I have tried several dairy free creamers and honestly there is no other creamer worth trying in my opinion.
If you are looking for dairy free coffee options while breastfeeding, oat milk is one of the best substitutes for traditional cream.
Dairy Free Breakfast Ideas for Breastfeeding Moms
When breastfeeding, I try to prioritize protein and simple ingredients so that I stay full longer and maintain my energy throughout the day.
I normally rotate between three simple breakfasts.
Peanut Butter Toast
Peanut butter on Sola bread is one of the easiest breakfasts I make. It is quick, filling, and provides a great balance of protein and carbs.
Protein Smoothie
A smoothie is perfect when mornings are busy.
My go to smoothie includes:
Frozen berries
Protein powder
Spinach
Oat milk
This combination is nutrient dense, dairy free, and takes less than five minutes to make.
Sweet Chicken Salad with Grapes
This might sound unusual for breakfast, but it is one of my favorites. I will eat sweet chicken salad with grapes on regular bread or soda bread for a protein packed start to the day.
Eating enough protein is extremely important for breastfeeding milk supply and postpartum recovery.
Easy Dairy Free Lunches for Busy Moms
Most days lunch is simply leftovers from dinner.
But when I do not have leftovers, I rely on a few staples that I try to keep stocked in my kitchen.
Crockpot Chicken Breast
Chicken breast is one of my biggest meal prep helpers.
If I know I do not have a healthy lunch ready, I will pull a pack of chicken breast from Costco out of the freezer and place it straight into the crockpot.
From there I can turn it into several easy meals.
Chicken Rice and Broccoli Bowl
One of my favorite dairy free lunches is:
Chicken breast
Rice
Broccoli
On top I add Yum Yum sauce and Bragg’s coconut aminos.
It is simple but very satisfying.
Mexican Style Chicken Bowl
Another easy option is turning that same chicken into a Mexican bowl with salsa rice and dairy free cheese.
Quick tip. If you are buying dairy free cheese, the only one I personally think is worth the money is Bettergoods from Walmart.
Spinach Salad with Chicken
Sometimes I will throw the chicken into a spinach salad for something lighter but still filling.
I have also found that cooking two chicken breasts at a time works perfectly for my family. They usually get eaten and do not leave awkward leftovers.
Dairy Free Sandwich Ideas
I also love making a good sandwich for lunch.
My favorite breads are Sola bread or Dave’s Killer Bread.
Classic Sandwich
Ham or turkey
Dairy free cheese
Mustard
BBQ Chicken Sandwich
This one is incredibly simple.
Cut up cooked chicken and drizzle BBQ sauce on top. Add Bettergoods dairy free cheese to the other slice of bread and place it open faced in the oven until everything is warm.
If I am feeling fancy, I will sauté onions to place on top.
If you enjoy onions, caramelized onions can sometimes satisfy that craving for cheesy flavor in meals.
Simple Dairy Free Snacks for Breastfeeding Moms
Breastfeeding hunger is very real, so I keep snacks very simple.
Some of my favorite dairy free breastfeeding snacks include:
Almonds
Apples
Oranges
These foods are easy to grab quickly and help keep my energy up throughout the day.
Dairy Free Dinner Ideas for Breastfeeding Moms
On an average day in my dairy free breastfeeding life, dinner usually looks something like this.
Stir fry with noodles or rice
Mexican fajitas, tacos, or rice bowls
Burgers without cheese
Spaghetti with salad
Root vegetable sheet pan with chicken
Red beans and rice with Conecuh sausage and Zatarain’s seasoning
Chicken and wild rice soup
French onion soup using beef bone broth
BBQ chicken burgers
Shrimp scampi
Shrimp sheet pan dinner
When cooking dairy free I often use olive oil, dairy free butter like Plant Crock, and bone broth whenever possible. These ingredients add flavor and richness without using dairy.
My Favorite Dairy Free Evening Treat
At the end of the day I usually enjoy a small treat.
My favorites are:
Ben and Jerry’s dairy free chocolate chip ice cream
Or
A cup of caffeine free tea with honey and lemon.
It is the perfect way to relax after a full day of breastfeeding and caring for my family.
My Favorite Dairy Free Breastfeeding Products
If you are starting a dairy free breastfeeding diet, these are a few products that have made things much easier for me.
These are staples I keep in my kitchen.
Protein powder for smoothies that helps support breastfeeding hunger
Oat milk for coffee, smoothies, and baking
Planet Oat French Vanilla creamer which is my favorite dairy free coffee creamer
Bettergoods dairy free cheese which melts well and tastes better than most dairy free cheeses
Sola bread or Dave’s Killer Bread for sandwiches and toast
Keeping a few reliable dairy free products on hand makes daily meals much easier when you are adjusting to a dairy free lifestyle while breastfeeding.
Frequently Asked Questions About Dairy Free Breastfeeding
What can you eat while breastfeeding dairy free?
You can eat many whole foods including meat, chicken, fish, fruits, vegetables, rice, potatoes, beans, nuts, and dairy free alternatives like oat milk or almond milk. Many moms focus on simple meals with protein, healthy fats, and carbohydrates.
Why do some breastfeeding moms go dairy free?
Some babies show signs of a cow’s milk protein intolerance through breast milk. This can cause symptoms like fussiness, gas, reflux, eczema, or blood in stool. Removing dairy from a mother’s diet can sometimes help improve these symptoms.
Does a dairy free diet affect milk supply?
In most cases, a dairy free diet does not reduce milk supply as long as the mother is eating enough calories and nutrients.
What are easy dairy free snacks for breastfeeding moms?
Some easy options include almonds, fruit, smoothies, peanut butter toast, hummus, or dairy free yogurt.
Final Thoughts on Dairy Free Breastfeeding
Eating dairy free while breastfeeding does not have to mean complicated meals or feeling restricted.
For me it is mostly about keeping simple ingredients on hand, finding a few meals I love, and making easy swaps for dairy products.
Most importantly, it is about nourishing my body well so I can nourish my baby.
If you are on a dairy free breastfeeding journey too, you are not alone. With a little planning and a few favorite foods, it truly does get easier.
